Vancouver Island Outdoor Adventure (4-5 Days)

As its name suggests, the Vancouver Island Sampler is a selection of exciting activities offered in one great program on Vancouver Island. The Sampler allows participants to try their hand at a range of challenging and rewarding outdoor pursuits in Tofino, BC.

Team Building Exercises and Camp Set Up
Introductory games, tarp shelter building, camping etiquette and safety concerns, fire construction, and more.

Wilderness Awareness & Survival Skills with Wes Gietz of Wind Walker Adventures
Students will participate in a number of fun activities throughout the day, such as a blind rope walk, gathering edible plants / berries, emergency shelter building / survival techniques, making stone boiled tea, a talking circle around a campfire, and more. Kayaking to the Big Tree Trail
After a safety talk, the students will paddle out from Tofino into the Clayoqout Biosphere Reserve. Your guides will lead you to Meares Island Tribal Park and take your group on an interpretive walk through one of Canada’s most pristine and threatened Old Growth Forests. Students will learn about the extensive native history of the region and discover the ecological significance of Old Growth Forests.

Surf Lessons
Students will have a great time learning the fundamentals of surfing, including safety concerns when in the water (such as what to do when caught in a rip tide.) Each student will receive hands on instruction and guidance from certified instructors.

Ucluelet Aquarium
The ‘Ukee’ Aquarium is the educational gem of the pacific rim - a place where we can get up close and personal with the myriad intertidal marine life found on our shores. The Aquarium’s staff are trained biologists who make learning fun!

Raincoast Education Society
The RES’ skilled naturalists can take your group on a rainforest walk, a beach exploration, a mudflat expedition and more! These programs are tons of fun, and a great way to learn more about the natural and cultural history of Clayoquot Sound and the critical ecological role of mudflats and wetlands on the west coast.

Camping is possible at Bella Pacifica Campground, which offers hot showers and a pool and hot tub close by. Hostel accommodations can be reserved by request. Aside from surfing, students can participate in a variety of activities including hiking, orienteering, outdoor skill exercises, intertidal zone exploration and more.

We can coordinate all logistics for a multi-day Tofino outdoor adventure tour, including:

Juan de Fuca Marine Trail Hike (3-5 Days)

Beautiful old growth forest, excellent coastal wildlife viewing opportunities, and well cared for trails and campsites make the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail one of BC’s premiere ocean side hiking trails. This program provides students with the opportunity to learn the fundamental elements in trip planning, zero impact camping practices, ecological discovery and the fundamental elements of leadership.

We can coordinate all tour logistics for a multi-day hike on the Juan De Fuca Marine Trail, including:

$140-160 + GST per person per day

Tofino Surfing Camp (3-5 Days)

Like the Island sampler, this surf trip takes place in Tofino. However, this trip focuses primarily on surfing, a sport that is growing exponentially in popularity on the West Coast of Canada. Tofino is Canada's top surf destination, boasting a variety of safe beach breaks on which to surf and over 8 different surf schools.

We have our own professional surf instructors who will assist students personally while in the water. Staff will be following safety standards set by the BC Surfing Instructors Association, which include:

Aside from surfing, students can participate in a variety of activities including hiking, orienteering, outdoor skill exercises, intertidal zone exploration and more.

Salt Spring Island Outdoor Adventure (4-5 Days)

Like the Vancouver Island Outdoor Adventure, this group tour offers students a while range of activities in one great program. The only difference is that it this program is based in the Dry Coastal Douglas Fir ecosystem of the Gulf Islands, versus the Temperate Coastal Forests of Tofino. Students can try their hands at a range of fantastic activities, including:

Introduction to Indoor / Outdoor Rock Climbing
Students will try their hand at rock-climbing in Salt Spring’s Indoor Rock-climbing gym, then move outside to try the real thing on Mt. Maxwell. Rock climbing is done with certified guides / instructors and offers students an empowering new challenge.

Intertidal Explorations with a Salt Spring Marine Biologist
The Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd. will bring in a local biologist for a 1.5 hour Intertidal Exploration Session on the Shores of Ruckle Provincial Park. Students will have a great ‘hands-on’ time learning about the Myriad Intertidal life that inhabits our shores.

Marine Park Kayak Tour (Gulf Islands National Park)
Your students will receive safety training and a paddle talk before venturing off for a 3 – 6 hour paddle. The Gulf Islands National Park offers bountiful wildlife (including porpoise, seals, eagles, vultures, whales, intiertidal life and more) a dry paddling climate, beautiful beaches and great walking trails. Students will learn the fundaments of kayak safety and technique.

2 Hour Optional Kayak Rescue Clinic on St. Mary Lake
Students will learn how to “wet exit” and recover from an unexpected capsize in the warm waters of St Mary’s Lake. This is invaluable information for future paddle enthusiasts.

Intro to Marine Biology with David Denning
David has an extensive background in Biology, Chemistry, and holds an M. Ed. in Science Education from the University of Victoria (1991). David is a highly respected interpretive educator in the field of Marine Biology and has facilitated countless educational programs for school age students. David will be joining us on our kayaking trips and will facilitate a hands-on Marine Biology interpretation program.

Gulf Islands Kayak Expedition (3-5 Days)

The Southern Gulf Islands are a world class kayaking destination; they are teeming with wildlife, have relatively protected and calm waters, retain an ancient and extensive Native history, and receive some of the best weather on the coast. The newly established (2003) Gulf Islands National Park, plus a large number of Provincial Parks, provide us with a great selection of excellent camping spots to choose from and well kept trails to explore.

The Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd. is first and foremost a kayaking company. Our assets include 15 kayaks (Seaward and Necky), all applicable safety and paddling gear, and a 12-passenger van for transportation. Our staff are trained and certified by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC and are Wilderness First Aid Certified.

Sustainability Adventure Tour (3-5 Days)

Learn about sustainable farming, bee keeping, composting, native plants, our local forest and intertidal ecosystems, and sustainable living including workshops on cheesemaking, canning, solar panels, and gas-to-electric car conversion.

Sustainable Farm Program Introduction

Students will work with Milo, who manages the farming on site at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga, to:

Biologist Beach Walk & Lab

Biologist David Denning will teach students about the different creatures in the intertidal zone, as well as educate on the issues we face locally in our ocean and beaches. Follow David to the Lab to be shown how he researches the local animals and environment and have the oppotunity to look at samples collected at the beach.

Solar Panel Introduction

David Denning will show you the different types of solar panels and how to install them, and tour around multiple places on the island where solar panel arrays are in use.

Eco Reality Farm with Jan Steinman

At this farm students will be introduced to sustainable living techniques. There will be numerous projects to work on. Students will be split into two groups and have the opportunity to help build a fence, learn cheesemaking, jam making and canning, soap making, and learn about converting a gas car into an electric car.

Salt Spring Nature Conservancy with Cathy Reimer

The Conservancy focuses on a number of threats to our local environment. Students will learn about the invasive plant species that are threatening our local area, as well as about the protection and control of precious, local, threatened species. Students will help remove invasive plants around Ruckle Park.
