Outdoor Education: International Programs

The Salt Spring Adventure Co. also offers opportunities for learning and adventures abroad. I, Sean Mulligan, the co-owner and operator of the Salt Spring Adventure Co., have worked on coordinating the logistics for and have lead international volunteer programs. In 2007/08 I worked with Developing World Connections, a non-profit organization based in Kamloops, BC. My role with the organization was to implement Developing World Connections’ student / youth international service programs.

I have experience in managing the logistics of an international volunteer program, including:

  • Accommodations, transportation, meals
  • Community development projects with our host organization
  • Group management
  • Flight and visa arrangements

Cambodia

In October 2007, I had the privilege of leading my second group of students from the University of Victoria on a 6-week volunteer experience to Cambodia. I have been to Cambodia on five separate occasions, am able to speak conversational Khmer (the national language), understand the do’s and don’ts of Khmer culture, and have developed a true love for the country.

Our host organization in Cambodia is Bridges Across Borders (BAB). BAB is an international, non-governmental organization (NGO) formed to build bridges between the world's peoples: North and South, East and West, "Haves" and "Have-Nots". The Salt Spring Adventure Co. shares BAB's mandate to:

  • Raise awareness in the Global North about the pressing issues faced by the Global South
  • Facilitate people-to-people exchanges, study tours, child sponsorship and volunteer programs
  • Initiate and support creative endeavours that affirm our common humanity

We also share Bridges Across Borders' belief that peace, sustainable development and human rights are interrelated and its work encompasses each of these facets. For more info on projects and philosophy, visit Bridges Across Borders.
